A Scholar (1631) by Rembrandt van Rijn
Send me an original question that we might pose to any professors who agree to attend a roundtable discussion about the general question:  "What makes an an academic essay 'academic'?"  I'll post approved questions here as they come in.  Due:  Thursday, April 14th at 10 a.m..

  1. Here is the question I sent out to all English and Language faculty:

    Comrades,

My Reading and Writing Advanced Essays class is hoping to host a roundtable discussion of the question “What makes an academic essay ‘academic’?” and I have offered to gauge faculty interest in participating.

We are hoping to have the roundtable at 10 a.m. on Friday April 15th (one week from today) or Monday, April 18th. Some of the students in the class attended one of the “Literary Analysis Colloquia” that we had last semester and are looking forward to continuing and expanding on the conversations that were initiated then. Whereas last semester’s colloquia focused on “literary analysis” in particular, the focus of this conversation would be broader in that it comprises the academic essay in general. They look forward to hearing our different takes on this simple, yet profound question. Students in the class will generate other thought-provoking questions to enrich the discussion and will share with us some of their own answers.

If you are interested in joining us, please let me know if either of the times listed above fit into your schedule. If you have class at that time and think your students would benefit from the discussion, we can try to look for a venue that is larger than Horace Mann 340.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!
